Scientists in the United States have created environmentally friendly and edible milk protein-based packaging for their products. The results were presented at an exhibition in Philadelphia. Edible packaging is the best alternative to modern plastic bags, which it is high time to get rid of. Plastic decomposes very slowly, and milk protein packaging is made from organic compounds and is environmentally friendly. In addition, the plastic packaging contains toxins that pollute the air. And some of them enter the body along with products, leading to various diseases.
The new packaging is made from casein protein. The film obtained from it has excellent characteristics, such as strength and breathability. Citrus pectin was introduced into the composition, which made the material resistant to high temperature and high humidity.
As a result, a film of milk protein in appearance and tactile sensations is not much different from ordinary plastic. In nature, such a material will quickly decompose without emitting harmful substances and without harming nature. If this technology becomes widespread, then in the foreseeable future it will be possible to replace plastic with more useful packaging.
